Supabase vs Firebase: which backend should you choose?

By Ohad Krispin, founder of VibeRaven · LinkedIn

Start with Supabase if your app revolves around related records, SQL queries and a Postgres database you want to work with directly. Start with Firebase and Firestore if document data, realtime listeners and offline mobile or web behavior fit the product. Firebase also offers PostgreSQL through SQL Connect, so this is not simply SQL versus NoSQL. Choose the specific database and workflow, then compare the surrounding services.

Why this matters

A task manager, booking system and offline field app can need very different backends even when their login screens look alike. The expensive mistake is choosing from a feature count before describing the queries and access rules your app needs. Documentation and pricing checked on 2026-10-15. This comparison uses official documentation and editorial decision examples, not a performance benchmark or a hands-on speed ranking.

Make the decision with one representative feature

  • Write the hardest everyday query before choosing. For example: show unpaid invoices for every customer managed by this employee, sorted by due date. Sketch the tables or documents and note where data must be duplicated.
  • Build one complete operation in a small disposable project: sign in, create a record, share it with one teammate and block an unrelated user. A public demo with a single account does not test your permission model.
  • Estimate reads, writes, file downloads, active users and database size separately. Include an ordinary month and a traffic spike. Use each provider's current calculator instead of comparing only the free-plan headline.
  • Name the person who will maintain queries, access policies, backups and billing. Prefer the stack that person can diagnose when a real user reports missing data.

Which would we shortlist for these apps?

These are illustrative recommendations based on requirements, not observed customer outcomes.

A booking or invoicing SaaS

Shortlist Supabase when relationships, reporting and transactional changes dominate. Also evaluate SQL Connect if the team already depends on Firebase. Write the booking conflict and membership checks before deciding which model feels simpler.

An offline field-service app

Shortlist Firestore when local edits and synchronization are central. Test reconnects, conflicting changes and the exact device SDK. Do not pick a backend for offline behavior that your chosen client platform does not implement.

An existing app that already works

Stay unless you can name the actual limitation. A migration should solve a measured query, cost or operations problem. Rebuilding a stable login and data layer to follow a trend creates work your customers do not benefit from.

Supabase and Firebase at a glance

Firebase is a product family, not a single database. The Firestore column below describes its document database; SQL Connect is a separate relational option.

Where each backend makes development easier

Supabase puts Postgres at the center of Auth, Storage, Realtime and Edge Functions. For a customer portal with customers, invoices and memberships, that gives you one relational model to reason about. It does not remove the work of designing indexes, transactions or correct access policies. SQL is useful when the questions you ask of the data change over time.

Firestore is a strong candidate when the app naturally reads a document or collection and keeps that view synchronized. Its offline support is relevant to a technician recording visits with unreliable connectivity. Plan how edits reconcile and how related data is represented. Do not translate every relational table into a collection without checking the resulting queries.

For teams that want Firebase services and relational data, evaluate SQL Connect separately. It defines schemas and application operations using GraphQL technology and generates type-safe client SDKs over Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. Compare that workflow with direct Postgres access; saying that Firebase cannot handle relational data would miss this option.

Pricing: compare the workload, not two starting prices

On 2026-10-15, Supabase lists a Free plan and Pro from $25 per month. Pro includes $10 in monthly compute credits; extra projects, larger compute and usage beyond included allowances can change the total. That starting price is not an unlimited backend budget.

Firebase has the no-cost Spark plan and usage-based Blaze plan, with availability and charges varying by product. Firestore bills relevant reads, writes, deletes, storage and network usage; some queries also incur index-entry read charges. SQL Connect includes a separate Cloud SQL cost consideration. A busy feed and a quiet admin dashboard can have very different bills with the same user count.

For a useful estimate, record what one session loads and multiplies. A screen that refreshes a large list repeatedly deserves attention before any provider switch. Measure a small realistic prototype and include external email, payment and hosting costs in your application budget.

Ownership, migration and the work after launch

Supabase offers a self-hosting route, but operating it means taking responsibility for infrastructure, updates, backups and availability. A Postgres export helps move database records; it does not automatically move user sessions, file storage, functions or every managed feature. Firestore migration similarly needs an explicit plan for document structure, SDK calls and permission rules.

For either choice, rehearse restoring useful data and changing a schema before you need an emergency fix. Keep a record of the deployed project, environment and access rules. A successful deployment says little about whether two customers can see each other's records.

Is Supabase cheaper than Firebase?

There is no workload-independent answer. Compare compute, database operations, network traffic and the services you use. Supabase Pro has a starting subscription; Firebase bills different products differently. Neither headline predicts your complete monthly bill.

Is Firebase only NoSQL?

No. Firestore is a document database, while Firebase SQL Connect provides a relational path backed by Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. Specify which Firebase database you mean when comparing it with Supabase.

Which is easier for a beginner?

Start with the data model you can explain and the workflow you can debug. A person comfortable with spreadsheets and relationships may prefer tables and SQL; someone building an offline mobile app may value Firestore SDK behavior more. Test one complete feature rather than judging the dashboards.
